Elko to Reno

Well, I’m staying in an RV Parking lot behind a casino/motel complex in downtown Elko. This is what you get when you pick places based on reviews on the internet ;-( It’s noisy, small, and full of permanent residents. Eastern Nevada is thriving because of the price of gold and silver, which directly impacts the local economies. There isn’t enough housing so every RV park is full of permanent residents. Mostly like trailer park living, but the RVs are towable/drivable, not “park” models.

One advantage to staying here is the cheap food and beer in the casino. I had lunch and a beer for $20 and had a beer watching the World Cup for $4. I’m headed back there for dinner before too long. After paying $50 for a burger and 2 beers in Banff and Canmore, I figure I can afford the best meal on the menu ;-)

This place has a strong WiFi signal with no connection issues, so I was able to get on line and send the emails I wrote last week while I was at Yellowstone.

Thursday June 26, 2014 Day 26 Elko NV

Add “noisiest” to the qualities of this place. And this AM the WiFi isn’t working correctly again ;-(

We had some excitement last night when a young man was caught burglarizing an RV, made a dash for it, and tried to hide on top of another RV. Lots of “blue light flash” and commotion. Then I was awakened about 3 AM by the loudest train in history, then at 6:30 someone in an adjoining shopping center started leaf blowing the whole parking lot. Then the garbage got picked up, then the facilities guy dropped a piece of pipe in his loading dock, adjoining which is my site. Boo, never stay here again, and I’ll write a suitable review on Google and Yahoo.

Breakfast, then off to Kenny’s. I’m not in too much of a hurry to get out of here because it’s only about 4 hours to Kenny’s and I don’t want to arrive too early.

I stopped in Lovelock for gas, and took a chance and inquired of the manager if he knew of a machine shop hereabouts run by someone named Pontius. He said there was only one machine shop in town and gave me directions.

When I got there, an unmarked building behind the sheriff’s department, I stuck my head in and yelled “Hello.” The answering voice sounded like Randy Pontius’ so I went in. Randy was, of course, surprised to see me, but after finishing with his customer, gave me a tour of his shop. He has every machine tool known to man. My brother would love poking around in Randy’s shop. After about 45 minutes, I was back on the road toward Reno.
