Revelstoke

It’s forecast to rain off and on today, so I’ll be prepared w/ raincoat and umbrella in the truck. I hope the thirteenth isn’t a bad omen for me. I don’t recall many being so in the past so I figure I’m good.

The trailer hasn’t named itself yet. Lots of personality but no name has magically appeared yet.

“Make your own luck” seems to be a recurring theme in my life starting with the Japanese amulet that Suzuki Teruji gave me 30 years ago, to this morning’s play of Mark Knopfler’s “Hot or What” in this morning’s random play list. The music is even more random than usual because Media Player can’t find about half the files in the database. I don’t know if it’s because the songs are actually missing (i.e., not copied to the laptop) or if MP’s database is confused because I moved the files onto the local HD.

I had a nice day in and around Revelstoke today. First the Railroad Museum in the morning. Lots of good exhibits about a “railroad town” that is still on the main line today.

Several trains a day, some long grinding beasts with helper engines in the middle and a pusher at the end, trundling through town at 20 or 30 MPH hauling their loads of grain from the prairie provinces to the ports on the coast. Fortunately they don’t blow their whistle at every grade crossing or this town wouldn’t ever sleep.

Then I went up to Revelstoke Dam, a nice, high concrete high dam with exposed steel penstocks down the face of the dam. No water over the spillways, every bit of it being used for power generation. They have 4 turbine/generators in operation and are installing a 5th. The ends of a 6th penstock exist but with no penstock pipe between.

Between the RR Museum and the Dam, I had lunch in a local sports pub. And an interesting sandwich called a Grizzly melt. Open face sliced French bread, shaved roast beef and plenty of it. Fried mushrooms, bell peppers and onions. A layer of brown gravy, then cheddar melted over the whole shebang. Very tasty, very filling.

The forecast rain still hasn’t come. It was quite sunny up at the dam, but it’s very cloudy now, with a stiff breeze blowing through the trees.

The Campground was about empty when I set out for the RR Museum this AM, it’s filling back up as the day gets later.

Twenty minutes later, it’s raining, but not hard.

Oh boy, a power outage. It seems to be the whole park, but it’s not just me. On batteries. The laptop is good for an hour or more, and the battery lights will probably last all night. But it’s an inconvenience. No amp and speaker. But little other.

All is well now. My power cord connection was out in the rain and caused a ground fault, which tripped the GFCI in the power tree, But I didn’t see it. The Camp Hostess fixed it in short order. A reminder to push that connection back into the trailer if there’s a possibility of rain.

It rained off and on all night, with more forecast for today here and at Banff. Hope it’s not snow at the summit.
