Nelson to Revelstoke

Left Nelson this morning, expecting a nice 3 hour drive to Revelstoke. The GPS predicted we’d get there ‘bout 1 PM. It doesn’t know about the 2-3 hour delay at the ferry. There are cars backed up a kilometer or more, waiting for their turn at a ferry that holds 26 small cars per trip.

I had a nice sandwich and an Okanagan Spring Porter in the trailer while waiting for my sailing. For all of Steve’s bitching about the “goddamned cocksucking motherfuckers” who stole his name, (Steve’s business has been called “Okanagan Spring” for 25 years or more) they make pretty decent beer. I’m going to go read my book while I wait for the sailing after next.

Well I didn’t get on that sailing, so I had another hour delay. There is a Raven who follows the ferry. He sits on various high points and looks at us. He flies away for a while but always returns to his perch on the ship. Never more.

My 3 hour drive day took 8 hours from end to end. But I got to Revelstoke OK and found the campground. It’s an RV park, on lawn, with very small spaces. Many foreigners, many Dutch, 3 groups of them, two of whom are neighbors in NL but didn’t expect to meet up in Canada at all. Lots of couples in rented class-c motor homes. A couple of tenters.

I didn’t get to shop except at the corner store where I got ice and milk only. So I had a salad and a concoction made from left over rice and sausage and chicken and a can of cream of mushroom soup. All in it tasted pretty good. I’ve eaten worse leftovers ;-)

I stopped in Revelstoke mostly to ride the famous gondola to the top of the mountain. It doesn’t open until the 21st ;-( I need to do some serious shopping and there’s a railroad museum and a nickelodeon museum, so those and some shopping should eat the day OK.

It’s hard to believe I’ve been out here for almost 2 weeks already. I’ve traveled about 1500 miles, averaging about 13.5 to 14.2 MPG, which didn’t seem so bad until I ran into Canadian gas prices. $1.45 per liter! The cumulative average is 12.75 MPG since home.
