Banff at Last!

Well, we got here OK. I had some doubts this AM when I went to hitch up and found the ball loose on the ball mount. The only thing that kept the ball from coming completely loose was the cotter pin !!! I tightened the nut as best I could, stopped 50 miles later and tightened it again, and stopped 50 miles farther on, and tightened it again. It stayed tight all the way to Banff. But Monday I’ll visit an RV shop and move the lock washer from the 2” ball mount to this one. That should fix the problem.

The mountains are OMFG Awesome. By far the most scenic and spectacular mountains I’ve ever seen. That’s what I came here for. I had trouble driving the last 40 miles from Lake Louise because of the scenery.

There are high, craggy mountains on both sides of the campground. On the north side is a massif with a huge glacial valley in it called Mt. Rundle. It’s Banff’s “signature” mountain. I can see it from my table by leaning over toward the icebox ;-)

With no Wi-Fi here, and no data service for the phone, I’m pretty cut off for a couple of days. That might be a good thing. I hope it will force me to focus on my photography and writing.

I crossed three divides today; the border from BC into Alberta, unnoticed except that the highway signs changed, the time zone border from Pacific to Mountain time, noticed by “Mother” the navigation system, and the continental divide. The latter was a more concrete one because the rivers started flowing East, toward the Mississippi instead of West toward the Columbia. Following the Columbia River across much of BC has been very cool. It’s huge at places like The Dalles. It’s still impressive at the Confluence with the Kootenay River at Castlegar, more than 1000 miles upstream.

It’s raining, and oh look, the trailer has a leak ;-( The drip is coming off the front window frame. So it’s getting in at the top of the front window. Not gonna be easy to find or fix. Oh well, put a towel under it and press on. I think I’m going to need to buy a couple of new towels, two out of three are soaking up drips.

Free Wi-Fi or free hot shower? That’s a choice you don’t get to make. This place has no Wi-Fi but has the aforementioned showers. I hate paying for a shower. I guess I can live without the Wi-Fi until I go to town tomorrow. Want to go to Lake Louise tomorrow too. Maybe LL early, lunch at the famous place, and shopping on the way home.
