“Yamping” – Camping in the Driveway

I had never slept on a Tempurpedic mattress, and so I decided that even before the first camping trip, I would sleep in the trailer one night to test the bed.

I spent the afternoon hanging out in the trailer, listening to music on the laptop and puttering. I haven’t tested the propane system yet so I cooked in the house but ate in the trailer.

After cleaning up the dishes (in the house), I took all my necessities out to the trailer with the intent of watching a movie on the laptop and turning in. I had previously put a 9 lb sack of ice in the ice box and stocked it with a six pack of beer, so I was set for the movie.

I slept well until about 5 AM when I woke up realizing that I was rolling out of bed, because the trailer isn’t level front to back. The tongue jack isn’t tall enough to raise the front of the trailer to level, and I had just gotten used to it, being closed in with no real vertical reference. I see what they say about pilots not being able to trust their senses in a whiteout or fog.

So, the big milestone of “first night in the new trailer” has passed, with more comfort and success than the first night in the teardrop. The first night in the teardrop was in the rain (also) in Calistoga. First the battery of my jury-rigged cabin light died prematurely, leaving me in the dark, then I awoke at 4:00 AM on the plywood floor, the air bed having deflated. When I went to make coffee the next morning, since there was no counter yet, the coffee ran all over the stove (which wasn’t level).

So far, so good. The next test is to spend a couple of nights away from home, so I may be off to Lake Lopez one Tuesday soon.
