Bye Bye WFCO!

Well, I’ve finally gotten the teardrop trailer into the garage so I could begin troubleshooting the electrical problem I experienced on the way home from the Treasure Island gathering last October.

I have yet to troubleshoot the tow vehicle to see what caused the problem, but a short-circuit at the automobile end of the connection caused a couple of wires to overheat and melt their insulation and scorch the wooden wiring panel!

There seems to be little incidental damage to the trailer wiring, but since the WFCO converter is being replaced, I’ll do some rewiring at the same time.

The WFCO converter failed at some point and no longer delivers current to or from the battery circuit. So, it won’t charge the battery when plugged into shore power and it won’t run the lights and fan etc. from the battery when not plugged in. Same problem as last August when it failed while camping, so now it’s being replaced.

The Progressive Dynamics PD4045 Converter/Charger that I’m replacing the WFCO with is larger than the WFCO, so the opening in the electrical panel must be enlarged. Since I have to modify the panel, I decided to remove it and make an all new panel instead of just enlarging the existing hole. This gives me the opportunity to clean up some of the work and to paint it without the components in place.

The components have been removed from the panel, and the new panel laid out. I won’t cut it until I have the PD converter in hand to verify the cutout measurements.

In the meantime, I’m working on finishing the insulation.
